What is Medical Massage?
When most people think of a massage, they tend to think of a spa treatment. However, massage can go far beyond a relaxation technique. A medical massage is a treatment that aims, not only to bring comfort, but improve your health and can be used to treat an injury, stress and other conditions.
The Benefits of a Medical Massage?
Since a medical massage aims to aid the body and mind, there are a number of health and physical benefits. These include:
- Relief from tension and stress
- Pain relief
- Reduction in inflammation
- Improved blood circulation
- An increase in energy
- Improved digestion
- Increased sense of calm
- Aid in healing injuries
- Improved posture
- Alleviates headaches
What You Should Know Before the Massage?
Always plan your massage around when it is a good time for your body. If you are suffering from a fever or any skin irritations, such as a sunburn, you should rather reschedule. Medical massages can also affect the dosage of medications you are on and should not be scheduled around periods when you are trying to stabilize your medication.
If it is your first massage, generally, the intake process will start with an interview with the massage therapist. The following type of information will be discussed:
- Medical conditions
- Areas of concern
- Your pain or discomfort on good and bad days
- What helps reduce the pain and what makes it worse
- Contact information
- Your right to privacy
- Consent and disclosure
It is important that you be completely honest with the massage therapist so that they are able to give you the best treatment possible.
The therapist will then outline what will happen in the massage session and then leave the room so you can undress to your comfort level. When you are ready, lie down on the massage table. There will be sheets or draping with which you can cover yourself. The therapist will knock before re-entering.
Things to Do Before Your Massage
- Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your massage
- Do not eat just before your massage
- Give yourself enough time to arrive on time and relaxed for the massage. If you are rushed and arrive stressed, it will take longer to get into a relaxed state.
- Bring your insurance card to your visit to see if you are covered for medical massage
